The Kevin McHugh Trio is a modern jazz trio that brings together different music—from Schumann to Nirvana—in a fresh and bold way, while still keeping a firm root in jazz. It is made up of players from around the world and reflects these different tastes and cultures in a unique and engaging music. The music critic Jeff Kirby hailed the group’s sound as “a fascinating mix of old and new…eclectic tastes with in-tune virtuosos, whose subtle and dynamic interplay engages and energizes the music.” Their ability to improvise comfortably over traditional jazz, rock, classical and other music makes this a truly dynamic and international group.

Pianist and composer Kevin McHugh has lived and performed in such cities as New York, Seattle, Boston, Cleveland, Berlin, and Shanghai. He has performed with many great musicians, including the drummer Billy Hart, saxophonist Gary Bartz (both members of Miles Davis groups), Jovino Santos Neto (flutist for Hermeto Pascoal), Marcus Belgrave, Bobby Selvaggio, Danny Fisher, and Coco, the Chinese jazz diva. He studied at the Oberlin Conservatory with Dan Wall and jazz history with the trumpeter Donald Byrd, as well as in New York with pianist Jason Moran.
Kevin McHugh is joined by Danish bassist Max Nauta and Berlin-based drummer Martin Krümmling, both active musicians in the Berlin jazz scene. The Kevin McHugh Trio has performed around Berlin and recorded an album in July 2005. Their diverse backgrounds make an internationally appealing and dynamic young group, which explores original compositions and new ways to improvise over jazz standards.
Currently the trio is on a break after a successful tour in Germany and Denmark. In Berlin, they recorded their second album, which will be released soon!
